Tip of the Iceberg
Tip of the Iceberg is our first in our series of endangered species sculptures. The sculpture is of a life size polar bear perched atop a pedestal of a melting iceberg. It is constructed of a metal frame and skinned with recycled plastic and illuminated at night with programmable LEDS. The base of the sculpture is a colorful under the seascape with plants and creatures made from recycled plastic trash. This sculpture was featured at Oregon Country Fair and was reworked to withstand the winter weather for the 2019 Portland Winter Light Festival, where it inspired thousands of festival goers.
Why It's Important, and Where YOU Fit In!
Have you ever noticed our human society has created a completely unsustainable world of material goods created from valuable resources to be used once and then thrown away? As artists and designers we know there have to be better ways to get our society's needs met without destroying the environment that gives us life. This sculpture has been successful in inspiring tough conversations about the challenging relationship with plastic and what we must do to keep it out of our natural world.
Community Engagement
The majority of this sculpture was created out of reused and recycled plastics.
We held workshops every Wednesday in June from 6pm-9pm where we invited the public to work on the bear, and make cool undersea creatures out of the plastic they donated.
Donate Money to Build the Dream!
To do our projects, we need money for materials to build the sculptures and the specialized tools to shred, melt and form plastic into new useful materials. This will take time for research and development and money for materials.
We are working in conjunction with Precious Plastics Portland. We need your help to fund development of this toolset which we will use in creating future sculptures. Thanks!
